1. Find an online space to house your blog. WordPress and Blogger both offer you free sites to work with and both are user-friendly and come with lots of help. You will need a google account to use Blogger though. No matter which service you choose, make sure that you play around with themes and styles to find something that you like.
2. Do some planning and research. What kind of blog so you want to write? What do you want to write about? Read similar blogs to get a sense of what others are writing, and how they construct their blogs – their tone, style, the length of their posts. What do you like or not like about their posts? Use these insights to help you plan your blog.
3. Write a few trial posts and get some advice. Talk to colleagues and get their feedback before you post online – see if you are striking the right tone with your target audience. It’s also easier to copy and paste from Word and then format rather than writing straight into the blog – editing and spell -checking are easier too!
4. Think about your style and tone. Blogging can be a little ‘formal’ if you use references in your posts, but it’s not a journal article. It’s more personal and openly subjective and there is a freedom in blogging. You can conjecture, wonder, pose questions, offer your own thoughts and opinions… you don’t need five different kinds of proof! So you may want to strike a professional tone, but also think about writing less formally and have some fun with your ideas.
5. Post as regularly as you can. People may lose interest if your blog only posts something new every once in a while or very sporadically. If you have subscribers they will be alerted to new posts, but others may just check in from time to time without subscribing. Try to post fairly regularly if you can, so that people stay engaged with you and interested in what you are saying.
6. Blogging is a visual medium. Try to incorporate pictures that are relevant to what you’re writing about. There’s nothing wrong with a blog post that consists entirely of text but adding images really makes a difference to the impact that your post will make on the reader.
